We are delighted to add GlowRugby to our offer in 2024. We have been asked by a few Primary Schools to come up with a game that is suitable for glow in the dark sport. So we ahve tried a few set ups and adapted rules in a few test sessions. Now we have the following guidance for those wanting to add GlowRugby to their Glow in the Dark sports activities.
GlowRuby is an adapted verion of tag/touch rugby. Below are the official rules of GlowRugby as set by GlowSports.
Rules for GlowRugby:
- Playing Area: The game is played indoors on a designated playing surface, usually a gymnasium or indoor sports hall, with clearly marked boundaries and a clearly defined in-goal area at each end. The side lines and dead ball line should be marked in red uv tape. The side lines and dead ball in must be a minimum of 1 meter from any obstacle and/or walls. The try line should be a green UV line. The in goal area should be at least two meters in depth. Half way is also marked by a green UV line.
- Teams: Each team consists of up to seven players on the field at any given time, with substitutions allowed during stoppages in play.
- Objective: The objective of GlowRugby is to score points by carrying or passing the ball into the opposing team’s in-goal area and grounding it (scoring a try).
- Starting Play: The game begins with a tap and go from the floor from the center of the field.
- Ball Handling: Players may pass the ball laterally or backwards, but not forwards. The ball can be carried or passed between players’ hands. It cannot be kicked. Two hands must be on the ball at all times. No hand offs are allowed.
- Tagging: Instead of tackling, defenders must “tag” the ball carrier by making contact with the designated tag area on the ball carrier’s clothing (usually a bib worn over the torso). Tag belts can be used but only where the tags are visible under UV light.
- Tag Limit: Each team is allowed to be tagged a maximum of seven times before a turnover occurs, with possession awarded to the opposing team.
- In-Goal Area: The in-goal area can only be entered by the attacking team. If a defending player enters the in-goal area, they must immediately retreat and not make contact with the attacking player.
- Scoring a Try: A try, worth 2 points is scored when a player from the attacking team grounds the ball in the opponent’s in-goal area. After scoring a try, the attacking team is awarded a conversion attempt.
- Conversion Attempt: To convert a try, the scoring team has the opportunity to score 1 additional point by throwing the ball from halfway over the defending players to a teammate in the in-goal area. For a younger age group you can agree a throwing point closer to the in goal line. The defending team may attempt to block the conversion by jumping or reaching to intercept the ball. If the defending team touches the ball or causes it to be dropped, or the ball is not caught the conversion is not successful. If the ball is caught by the try scorer than the conversion is successful.
- Restart After Try: Following a try, play restarts with a tap and go, from the floor, by the team who just conceded own in goal line,
- Fair Play: Players must remain on their feet at all times. Deliberate contact, obstruction, or illegal play will result in penalties. Players must not be forced or pushed out of the playing area. If this is done the ball is turned over.
- Drop Ball: If the ball is dropped during play, possession is awarded to the opposing team from where the ball was dropped. The play restarts by a tap and go from the floor. The opposing team must retire 5 metres from where the ball was dropped as soon as the ball is dropped.
- Offside: Players must remain behind the ball carrier or last teammate who touched the ball. A player must be onside to make a tag. To be onside they must arrive from the direction of their in goal area after a previous tag has been made.
- If a tag has been mad and offside players retreating must stay clear of any passes being made until they are onside
- End of the Game: The game is typically played in halves or quarters, with the team scoring the most points declared the winner at the end of regulation time.
